Hind's Feet on High Places
The Prophet Habakkuk lived some 600 years before Jesus was born. The days in which Habakkuk lived were challenging days as God’s people had wandered far from His Word and were living much like the pagan nations around them. As Habakkuk attempted to warn his people of impending judgment for their sinful actions, it became clear that the people were not ready to turn back to their God. Hence, the Babylonian Exile of the Jews from Judah took place from 605 – 586 BC.. Habakkuk may have been one of those taken into Babylonian exile, or he may have died prior to the exile. Whatever the case, Habakkuk gives a glimmer of hope to his people and to you and me today as he tells us that even though we may find ourselves in circumstances that can be incredibly trying, if we humble ourselves before God and ask for His Divine intervention He will come through for us. This thought is seen in Habakkuk 3: 17 – 19. Habakkuk says:
“Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls – yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s (hinds) feet, and He will make me to walk on my high hills.”
Verse 17 represents the challenging moments of life; however, verses 18 & 19 represent the abilities God will give us to make it through those challenging moments. Habakkuk likens our challenges to the mountains we are asked to climb from time to time. And yet when God asks us to climb the mountain, He tells us He will make our feet like “hinds” feet. The hind is a species of deer found in the Middle Eastern area and is one of the most sure footed animals in the world. As one watches them upon the mountains, one is amazed at the seeming effortlessness of their bounding from one precipice to the other.
If you are facing a challenge that has taken on the guise of a mountain in your life and it hasn’t moved yet, trust God that He will enable you to traverse the mountain, and if need be, He will enable you to live on your mountain until such a time as He removes it from your midst. |
